13 students and a teacher sit cross-legged on a classroom floor. They are looking at a whiteboard on which a video conference is being projected.

Ms. Healy's 1st-grade class has spent the last two months engaged with Massachusetts Maritime Academy's "Follow the Voyage" program. The program allows the students to follow Mass Maritime cadets on their Sea Term aboard the TS Kennedy (2023 ports of call: Bridgetown, Barbados; Oranjestad, Aruba; Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas; and Fort Lauderdale, Florida) through location tracking, blogs, photography, videos, and curriculum materials. This has been especially meaningful as there were several Squantum cadets on board the ship this term.

This morning, the group got to video conference with the ship's Chief Mate Melissa "Mel" Turner, who described life at sea and answered important questions from our students about daily routines, waste management on the ship, what kinds of ocean animals the ship frequently encounters (dolphins and lots of birds,) and why the cadets are not allowed to swim off the side of the ship🦈!

Thank you to our friends at Mass Maritime and to Ms. Healy for connecting our students to this outstanding STEM adventure!
